The Bitterness of Thomas: A Beltane Tale
It was the night of Beltane, and the village was alive with the sound of laughter and music. The May Queen and her court had arrived at the center of the village, where a great bonfire burned brightly in the darkness. The villagers had gathered around it, dressed in their finest clothes and carrying torches to light the way for the procession.
As the night wore on, the May Queen and her court made their way through the village, stopping at each house to bless the occupants with a sprinkling of sacred water and a touch of their hands. The villagers welcomed them warmly, offering gifts and good wishes for the coming year.
But not everyone in the village was happy about the May Queen's visit. A young man named Thomas had always felt left out of the celebrations, and he resented the May Queen and her court for what he saw as their privileged status. He watched from the shadows as they made their way through the village, his heart filled with anger and envy.
As the night wore on, Thomas could no longer contain his feelings. He crept closer to the May Queen's party, his footsteps silent on the dew-soaked grass. When they were closest to the bonfire, he stepped out of the shadows and confronted them, his eyes blazing with resentment.
"How can you be so happy?" he spat at the May Queen. "Don't you know that the world is not a fair place? That some of us are left behind while others are chosen for greatness?"
The May Queen looked at him with compassion in her eyes. "Thomas, you are mistaken," she said gently. "Greatness is not something that can be given or taken away. It is within each and every one of us, waiting to be discovered and nurtured. You have the power to create your own destiny, to make your own luck."
Thomas scoffed at her, his anger unabated. "You don't know anything about me," he said. "You're just a figurehead for the villagers to worship and obey. You're not even real."
The May Queen smiled sadly. "I am real enough to see the good and the bad in this world," she said. "And I will continue to bring light and joy to those who are open to receiving it, no matter what you may think of me."
With that, she turned and walked away, her court following close behind. Thomas watched them go, feeling a twinge of regret for the anger he had let consume him. But it was too late now; the damage was done, and he knew that he would never be able to make things right again.
As the night wore on, the villagers returned to their homes, the May Queen's court disappearing into the darkness. Thomas was left alone, his heart heavy with regret and his spirit crushed by his own bitterness. He knew that he would never be able to find peace or happiness as long as he held onto his resentment. But he also knew that he could not change the past; all he could do was try to make amends for the wrongs he had done, and hope that someday, somehow, things would be different.
