Advocate of the Divine: A Quest for Justice
In a world where magic was real, the Advocates were a group of powerful beings who served as mediators between the mortal world and the divine. They were tasked with resolving disputes and interpreting the will of the gods, and they were feared and respected throughout the land.
One day, a young man named Marcus stumbled upon an Advocate in the midst of a heated argument with a group of villagers. The Advocate was red-faced and shouting, waving his hands wildly as he spoke. Marcus approached cautiously, not wanting to interrupt, but the Advocate noticed him and turned to face him.
"Ah, a curious mortal," the Advocate said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "What brings you to this... interesting... gathering?"
Marcus explained how he had been walking through the forest when he overheard the argument and couldn't help but be drawn in. The Advocate listened intently, his piercing eyes never leaving Marcus' face.
"I see," the Advocate said after a moment of silence. "Well, you have stumbled upon a rather... contentious... issue. You see, these villagers believe that their god has spoken to them directly and given them a commandment, while I believe that the god in question is merely testing their faith. It seems we cannot come to an agreement."
Marcus was taken aback by the Advocate's words. He had never heard of such a thing before - gods testing the faith of their followers? It seemed preposterous, but the Advocate was insistent.
"You see, my dear mortal," the Advocate continued, "the gods are not as all-powerful and all-knowing as they would have you believe. They are fallible, just like us. And it is our duty to interpret their will and ensure that it aligns with the natural order of things."
Marcus couldn't help but be fascinated by the Advocate's words. He had always believed in the gods, but he had never thought about them in this way before. The Advocate seemed to have a deep understanding of the divine, and Marcus found himself wanting to learn more.
"But what happens if the villagers are right?" Marcus asked, his voice barely above a whisper. "What if their god really did speak to them directly?"
The Advocate chuckled, a low, rumbling sound. "Ah, mortal, you are too quick to assume that the gods are always just and fair. But I assure you, there is no guarantee of divine intervention. The gods are not so kind as to always side with the virtuous. No, they are capricious and unpredictable, like any other being."
Marcus felt a shiver run down his spine at the Advocate's words. He had never thought about the gods in this way before, but he couldn't help but feel a sense of unease at the idea that they were not always on the side of good.
"But what can I do to help?" Marcus asked, his voice filled with determination. "I don't want to see these villagers harmed just because they believe their god spoke to them."
The Advocate smiled, a small, enigmatic smile. "Ah, you are a true advocate for justice," he said. "You see, my dear mortal, the key to resolving this dispute is not through force or coercion, but through understanding and empathy. You must listen to the villagers' beliefs and try to see things from their perspective. Only then can you hope to find a resolution that pleases both parties."
Marcus nodded eagerly, determined to do just that. He thanked the Advocate for his time and set off into the forest, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.
