In the Shadow of Night: A Tradition of Transition
Once upon a time, in a small village nestled in the heart of a dense forest, there was a strange tradition. Every year, on the eve of the winter solstice, the villagers would gather to perform a ritual known as "coffining."
The villagers believed that during the longest night of the year, the veil between the living and the dead grew thin, allowing spirits to roam free. And so, they took it upon themselves to honor these spirits by encasing themselves in coffins, just like the dead.
The preparations for coffining began weeks in advance. The villagers would gather wood from the forest, crafting each coffin to fit each person perfectly. They would then adorn their coffins with intricate carvings and symbols, representing their lives and loved ones.
On the eve of the solstice, the villagers would make their way to the town square, carrying their coffins with them. As night fell, they would gather around a large bonfire, where they would light candles and incense, filling the air with fragrant smoke.
One by one, the villagers would climb into their coffins, closing the lid with a soft thud. The fire crackled and popped as the crowd watched in silence, mesmerized by the eerie sight.
As the night wore on, the villagers would begin to drift off into a trance-like state, their breathing slow and steady. It was said that during this time, the spirits of the dead could communicate with the living, offering wisdom and guidance for the coming year.
The villagers remained in their coffins until the first light of dawn, when they would slowly emerge, blinking and disoriented. As the sun rose higher in the sky, they would return to their homes, ready to begin the new year with a fresh perspective and renewed sense of purpose.
Despite the initial shock of witnessing their friends and neighbors encased in coffins, the villagers came to see coffining as a sacred tradition, one that allowed them to connect with their ancestors and honor those who had come before them. And so, they continued the ritual year after year, passing it down through generations, each one adding their own unique touches and interpretations.
To this day, the village of coffining remains a mystery to outsiders, hidden deep within the forest. But for those who have experienced the ritual firsthand, it is a powerful reminder of the enduring cycle of life and death, and the magic that can be found in the darkness of night.
