The Curse of Immortality: Admetus' Endless Descent into Solitude
In the land of Thessaly, there lived a great king named Admetus. He was a just and fair ruler, loved by his people and revered for his wisdom. But Admetus had one fault: he was cursed with a fatal flaw that would eventually lead to his downfall.
As he grew older, Admetus became increasingly obsessed with the thought of his own mortality. He knew that he would one day die and leave behind his kingdom, his people, and everything he held dear. It was a bleak and hopeless prospect, and Admetus could not shake the feeling of impending doom.
One day, as he sat in his throne room, he received a visit from the goddess Alcestis. She was a mysterious and powerful figure, known for her ability to grant wishes and make miracles. Admetus knew that he had no right to ask for anything, but he could not help himself.
"Great goddess," he said, his voice trembling with fear and despair, "I beg of you, please grant me immortality. I know it is a great gift, one that few have ever received. But I cannot bear the thought of leaving this life behind. I will do anything, promise anything, if only you will grant my wish."
Alcestis listened to Admetus' plea, her face expressionless and unreadable. After a long moment of silence, she spoke.
"Admetus, king of Thessaly," she said, "I understand your desire for immortality. It is a tempting gift, one that many have sought throughout history. But I must remind you, it comes with a price. You see, when one is granted immortality, they are also bound to the earthly realm forever. They cannot leave, cannot move on to the afterlife. They are trapped in this world, alone and unchanging."
Admetus was taken aback by Alcestis' words. He had not thought of this consequence before, and now he realized how terrible it would be to be immortal and alone. But still, he could not help himself. He begged and pleaded with the goddess to grant him his wish.
Alcestis sighed and nodded her head. "Very well," she said. "I will grant your wish, Admetus. You shall be immortal, but as you wish, alone in this world."
And so it was that Admetus became immortal, doomed to live forever in a world that changed and passed him by. He watched as his kingdom crumbled and his people forgot him, as the years stretched out into eternity. And yet, he could not bring himself to leave this world behind, trapped as he was in a never-ending cycle of life and death.
In the end, Admetus realized that his immortality was both a blessing and a curse. He had been given the gift of eternal life, but it was a gift that he could not truly enjoy, for he was forever bound to this world and all its sorrows. And so he lived out the rest of his days in solitude and despair, a reminder to all of the dangers of seeking power and immortality beyond the natural order of things.
