The Unending Sacrifice of Draftees in Times of War
It was the summer of 1967, and the world was at war. The United States had been drafting young men into the military for months, and John had just received his own draft notice in the mail. He was only 19 years old, but he knew that this was a moment that would change his life forever.
John grew up in a small town in the Midwest, where everyone knew each other. He had always been the curious type, and had dreamed of adventure and travel. But now, as he read the letter from the Selective Service System, he realized that those dreams were put on hold. He would be sent to Vietnam, a country he had only heard about in news reports and books.
John's heart raced as he called his parents with the news. His mother cried, his father tried to offer words of comfort, but John knew that this was something he had to do. He had always felt a sense of duty to serve his country, and now that duty had become real.
The days leading up to his departure were a blur of packing and goodbyes. John said tearful farewells to his friends and family, and tried to put on a brave face as he boarded the bus that would take him to the train station. He was joined by other draftees, young men from different parts of the country, all with their own stories and fears.
The train ride was long and grueling, but John tried to occupy himself with books and magazines. He met a few of the other soldiers on the train, and they shared stories of their lives before the draft. One man had been a high school teacher, another had worked in a factory. When John arrived at the base in Vietnam, he was hit with a wave of heat and humidity. He was assigned to a unit that would be sent on patrol missions, and he spent his days trudging through the jungle with his fellow soldiers.

He wrote letters to his family and friends, trying to describe the horrors of war, but also the sense of purpose he felt.
Weeks turned into months, and John's unit was rotated back to the States. He returned home to a hero's welcome, with parades and celebrations in his honor. But as he hugged his parents and friends, he knew that he had been forever changed by the experience of war.
John's story is just one of millions, but it highlights the sacrifices made by draftees during times of conflict. They left behind their homes and families to serve their country, and many never returned the same.
