The Toxic Backbone of Antofagasta: A City's Struggle with Progress and Resilience
In the scorching deserts of Chile, there lies a city that is home to one of the largest mineral deposits in the world. Antofagsta is a bustling metropolis that has been built upon the backbone of the mining industry. The city's history dates back centuries, with the indigenous peoples of the area first discovering the rich veins of copper and other minerals in the surrounding hills. Over time, the Spanish conquistadors arrived, followed by waves of immigrants from Europe and Asia, each contributing to the city's growth and prosperity.
Today, Antofagasta is a thriving metropolis that is home to over half a million people. The city's economy is built upon the backbone of the mining industry, with giant corporations like Chilean copper giant, CODELCO, and Anglo American, extracting vast quantities of copper and other minerals from the surrounding hills. The city's skyline is dominated by towering smelters and refineries that hum day and night as they process the raw materials mined from the desert.
