Auxiliaries: The Return of Magic
In a world where magic was a thing of the past, humans had to rely on technology and science to get by. But there were those who believed that magic still existed, hidden away in the shadows of society. These individuals were known as "auxiliaries," people who possessed a special power or ability that set them apart from the rest of humanity.
One such auxiliary was a young woman named Lena. She had always known she was different, even before she discovered her powers. Lena could sense emotions, not just her own but those around her as well. It was a useful skill in a crowded city like New York, where people's emotions often bubbled to the surface. But it also made her a target for those who sought to exploit her abilities.
Lena worked as a psychic medium, using her powers to communicate with the dead. It was a job that brought her into contact with all sorts of people, from grieving families to skeptical scientists. But Lena never revealed her true nature to anyone, not even those closest to her. She knew that if the wrong people found out about her abilities, she could be in grave danger.
One day, Lena received a cryptic message from an unknown source. It read simply: "Meet me at the old oak tree in Central Park at midnight. Come alone." Lena's heart raced as she pondered the meaning of the message. Who could be behind it, and what did they want with her?
As the appointed time drew near, Lena made her way to Central Park. The night was dark and moonless, but she could sense the presence of others around her. She approached the old oak tree, her heart pounding in her chest. And then, out of the shadows, a figure emerged.
It was a man Lena had never seen before, with piercing green eyes and jet-black hair. He wore a long black coat, and carried a small leather satchel slung over his shoulder.
"Who are you?" Lena demanded, trying to hide the fear in her voice.
"My name is Felix," the man replied, his voice low and smooth. "I've been watching you, Lena. I know all about your abilities."
Lena's eyes narrowed. "How do you know my name?"
Felix smiled. "You're not the only one with secrets, Lena. You see, there are others like us, people with powers that set them apart from the rest of humanity. And we've been watching each other, learning from each other."
Lena felt a shiver run down her spine. She had always suspected that she wasn't alone in the world, but to know that there were others like her was both exhilarating and terrifying.
"What do you want from me?" Lena asked, trying to keep her voice steady.
Felix opened his satchel and pulled out a small, leather-bound book. "This is the history of our kind," he said. "We've been hiding in plain sight for centuries, watching as humanity has forgotten its own magic. But there's something more, something that could change everything."
Lena frowned, unsure of what to make of Felix's words. But something about him and his book resonated deep within her. She felt a connection to this man she had just met, a sense that they were on the same side.
"What is it?" Lena asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Felix smiled again. "The return of magic," he said. "We believe that with the right combination of powers and knowledge, we can bring magic back to the world. And you, Lena, are key to our mission."
Lena's eyes widened in shock. She had never thought about restoring magic to the world, but now that Felix had mentioned it, she couldn't help but feel a spark of hope.
"How?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Felix's smile turned serious. "We need you to help us find the ancient texts," he said. "The ones that hold the secrets of magic. And we believe you're the only one who can lead us to them."
Lena felt a rush of excitement at Felix's words. She had always known she was different, but she never realized how special her abilities truly were. And now, with Felix by her side, she knew that together they could change the world.
"I'm in," Lena said, her voice firm and resolute. "Let's do it."
Felix nodded, a look of approval on his face. And together, they set out to rediscover the magic that had been lost for so long.
